Businessperson Choosing A Domain Provider

Domain Registry

Choosing the best domain name can be a tedious process just by itself. Once that has been established, you want to make sure you protect your asset by securing it with the best registrar. Every domain registry is not created equal and there are some companies that you should try and avoid.

It’s hard to keep track of all the companies that aren’t worth your time and resources, so instead of putting together a list of companies to blacklist, it’s best to establish the basic criteria on what to look for in a domain reseller and/or and registry.

ICAAN Accredited

The International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is a nonprofit that was established in 1998. It holds the power to manage, monitor, supervise and oversee domain name registration services. When a company is accredited by ICAAN, this means that the business has proven trustworthy in it’s ability to deliver. Make sure that the company you are working with is accredited to avoid being ripped off or disappointed.

Read Your Contract

Sometimes we are so eager to move on that we don’t take the time needed to thoroughly read through a contract. There are a wide range of dates that you can sign up for when it comes to time to register, with as little as 1 year and as much as 10 years. Make sure you understand the fees and restrictions associated with transferring to another registrar, and renewing your domain.

Transfers

As stated above, there are times when it’s best to transfer your domain name to another registrar. Understand beforehand what this could mean for you financially. Some registrars don’t allow transfers or may charge a fee to do so.

Customer Support

Choose a domain registration company that offers good customer support. You’ll be glad you did if you ever run into technical issues. When your website is involved, you want to be with a company that can respond quickly, especially if the site goes down.
